Introduction - Why Is This So Important?

The CAHIIM Domains list Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, computer Applications and Pharmacology as “Foundation Knowledge.”  There are no specific competencies a student must master for these areas.

However, these areas include information that an HIM Professional will use often and a solid understanding of this information will support other activities.

For example, a coder will not be able to comprehend and assign codes to an operative report unless he knows the “language of medicine”, the body structures addressed, anatomical direction and indications. An Information Governance specialist will need a thorough knowledge of diagnoses and procedures to analyze utilization reports. The list of examples is endless.

The difficulty is that these courses are completed early in the HIT program. By the time graduate sits for the RHIT exam, much of this information, not used regularly, has been forgotten.

In this module, we have the most complex body systems covered with a variety of activities designed to wake up the memory of these early courses.
