Professional Practice Experience
Select which module you would like to explore. Each button will take you to a different module in the workbook and will include narrative information, resources and activities.
With the change in healthcare documentation from a paper (manual) record to electronic (automated), you will encounter many challenges if you work in a facility that is transitioning or is maintaining a hybrid record. This Professional Practice Experience (PPE) is designed to provide you with electronic, hybrid and paper experience. In the workbook, look for an "E" for electronic or a "P" for paper next to each task. Check back frequently for modifications reflective of changes in the industry.
Important resources for this activity are below. This website uses the term Professional Practice Experience (PPE) to refer to the practicum or affiliation, (also previously referred to as "clinical experience”) the student participates in throughout his or her HIM educational program. Each CAHIIM-accredited HIM program must have at least one minimum 40-hour PPE that helps students assimilate theory with practical application in order to work toward achievement of AHIMA entry-level competencies in a real-world environment.
This site is developed to support both the AHIMA “Best Practice Hybrid Model for the PPE as well as the traditional full placement at an Affiliate Site. The hybrid model setting reflects more accurately the current professional climate. It exposes the student not only to the direct PPE experiences but also provides the student with the opportunity to refine skills such as data mining, code assignment and compliance using resources available at the school.
Use of the Hybrid over the traditional is designed for the student who is experienced, has specific interest beyond the baseline skills and can produce a professional work product. In the hybrid model, the student is expected to complete at least half of the required PPE hours in an Affiliate Site experiencing hands-on, direct experience and the remaining half in a special project assigned by either the Faculty responsible for the PPE or the Affiliate Site mentor.
Use the Workbook below to guide your participation in a simulation PPE. There are ten modules (nine task - specific and one independent project) in the workbook. Each module covers a different aspect of HIM tasks. Within each module are a number of tasks that you may be required to complete for your PPE.
You will be assigned an external mentor who will meet with you via Zoom, review your work and provide feedback and sign off on your assignments. Important resources for this activity are below.
